Aftercare.
A short guide. Read it the day you get tattooed and again the next morning.
First night
- Leave the bandage on for the time your artist specified. Usually two hours for traditional wrap; up to five days for second-skin.
- Remove the bandage in the shower. Warm water loosens any plasma stuck to the wrap.
- Wash gently with fragrance-free soap and clean hands. No washcloths.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub.
- Let the tattoo air dry for fifteen minutes before re-bandaging or sleeping.
First two weeks
- Wash the tattoo twice a day with fragrance-free soap. Pat dry.
- Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion. Aquaphor for the first three days, then a light unscented lotion like Lubriderm or Cerave.
- Do not pick, scratch, or peel. The skin will flake on its own around day five to ten. Let it.
- Wear loose clothing over the area. Avoid anything that rubs.
For two weeks, avoid
- Soaking the tattoo (pools, baths, hot tubs, oceans, lakes).
- Direct sun on the tattoo. After two weeks, use SPF 50+ for the life of the tattoo.
- Heavy sweat. Light exercise after a few days is fine.
- Pets and gym equipment touching fresh ink.
When to call us
Some redness, warmth, and oozing in the first 48 hours is normal. Spreading redness past the tattoo line, fever, pus, or worsening pain after day three is not. Call us or your doctor if any of these appear.
